It’s well-known that submitting app screenshots is a requirement for publishing your OTT app in various app stores. However, this step often becomes an afterthought amidst other priorities like user acceptance testing, filling out data governance forms, and setting up subscriptions.

As a result, the screenshots submitted are often just basic captures of the OTT app, lacking any additional messaging.

With a bit more design effort and strategic thinking, app store screenshots can become a powerful tool to communicate your app's value to potential customers.

Decide the value you want to showcase

What makes your service unique? What do you want potential users to notice first about your app when you design your video streaming service? Before creating your screenshots, think about how you want to position your app to your audience.

Content

Many top-tier OTT services emphasize the content they offer, particularly those that produce their own popular original content, such as Disney, Max, and Amazon Prime.

HBO and Disney showcasing their original content.

Services also like to showcase a snapshot of their available content to give users a preview of what they can expect to watch.

Disney+ and HBO displaying a selection of content to engage potential subscribers.

Alternatively, you can highlight an entire genre to capture your audience's attention, such as children's content in this case.

HBO Max highlighting their suitability for families.

Features

Some services also highlight features within their app that enhance the user viewing experience. Popular features to showcase include Offline Download and Watchlists.

Service

You can also get creative with the "side-by-side" aspect of store screenshots. For example, Disney+ used a continuous display across two slides to create maximum impact.

Disney+ using sideways scrolling for a more impactful experience.

Other services use their last screenshot to make a final statement about the value of their service, and use the opportunity to elevate their brand.

Use the final screenshot to reiterate the value of your service.

With thoughtful design, the opportunities to elevate your brand are endless. If you haven’t yet, consider a "screenshot revamp" for your next app update!
